You Know You Tried To Make These Trends Work
The ’90s brought us some of the boldest, quirkiest fashion trends. Looking back, it’s hard to believe some of these styles were once the height of fashion. From baggy jeans to neon windbreakers, the ’90s made us all experiment with unique looks that, in hindsight, are more cringe-worthy than cool. Let’s all go the Gadzooks that is our memory palace and revisit some trends from the ’90s that we can’t believe we wore.

Baggy Jeans

Baggy Jeans
Baggy jeans were a defining look of the ’90s. These jeans weren’t just loose—they were several sizes too big, with wide legs that sometimes swallowed our shoes completely. Brands like JNCO and Levi’s embraced the trend, offering exaggerated cuts that became staples in youth culture. Many people wore them with oversized T-shirts and hoodies for that ultra-relaxed vibe. While they were comfortable and stylish at the time, looking back, it’s clear baggy jeans were a bit much.

Butterfly Hair Clips

Butterfly Hair Clips
If you grew up in the ’90s, you probably remember butterfly hair clips. These small, colorful clips were everywhere, and wearing just one or two wasn’t enough. Most people clipped a dozen or more into their hair, creating an eye-catching and sparkly look. Butterfly clips were playful and came in assorted colors and sizes. They added a touch of whimsy to any hairstyle and made everyone feel like a ’90s pop star. While the trend might seem childish today, butterfly clips were once the go-to accessory for anyone who wanted a trendy look.

Cargo Pants

Cargo Pants
Cargo pants were all about functionality with a side of fashion. These pants had large pockets on the sides, making it easy to carry anything from snacks to gadgets. Cargo pants became especially popular with skaters and those who loved a relaxed, utility style. While the extra pockets were useful, cargo pants had a bulky look that didn’t flatter everyone. Still, they were a ’90s staple, and many people embraced them for their practicality. Today, cargo pants have made a bit of a comeback, but with a more fitted, modern twist that’s less about bulk and more about style.

Chokers

Chokers
Chokers were the edgy, must-have accessory of the ’90s. These tight-fitting necklaces came in different styles, from stretchy black plastic to velvet or leather with charms. A choker could instantly add coolness to any outfit and was often paired with grunge or punk-inspired looks. Looking back, chokers were one of the more daring ’90s accessories, giving wearers a sense of boldness and confidence. Chokers have actually come back, proving that not only is style cyclical, but it’s for the young.

Flannel Shirts

Flannel Shirts
Flannel shirts were a major trend in the ’90s, especially thanks to the grunge music scene led by bands like Nirvana. These shirts were usually oversized and left unbuttoned over a T-shirt, giving off a laid-back vibe. Both men and women loved the look, and flannel became a staple in everyone’s closet. Flannel shirts were all about comfort and ease, but the oversized style hasn’t stuck around. Today, flannel shirts are more fitted, but they still hold a special place as a symbol of ’90s grunge and rebellious style.

Neon Everything

Neon Everything
The ’90s were all about standing out, and neon colors were a way to make sure you did just that. From neon pink to electric green, these bright colors were everywhere. Neon was popular in everything from T-shirts and windbreakers to hats and sneakers. The trend wasn’t limited to clothing, either—neon colors appeared in makeup, nail polish, and even school supplies, adding brightness to everyday life. While neon is still used in fashion today, it’s often toned down or used as an accent rather than a full outfit.

Windbreakers

Windbreakers
Windbreaker jackets were lightweight, colorful, and perfect for any weather. These jackets came in all sorts of bold color combinations, often featuring neon hues or geometric patterns. Brands like Nike, Adidas, and Reebok carried this trend, creating iconic designs that appealed to both fashion enthusiasts and athletes. They were a favorite for outdoor activities, school, and even just hanging out with friends. While windbreakers are still around, the bright colors and patterns of the ’90s versions make them stand out as a unique trend.
