Supermodel Molly Sims
Supermodel Molly Sims recently shared her strategies for avoiding weight gain during Christmas season. She advised against attending parties on an empty stomach to prevent overeating. A previous study in the New England Journal of Medicine indicated that the average American gains just under 1 pound during the holiday season. Join us in this slideshow as we dive into advice from Sims.
Dr. Jayne A. Lieb, a bariatric surgeon
Dr. Jayne A. Lieb, a bariatric surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, noted that many people feel a lack of control over their weight during the holidays. The disruption of routines and increased availability of high-calorie foods can lead to overeating.
Sims suggests alternating alcoholic drinks
Sims suggests alternating alcoholic drinks with nonalcoholic ones and prioritizing protein throughout the day. Sims said, “You just kind of want to set yourself up for success,” adding, “protein, protein, protein and do your protein all day. You’re more your carbs in night.”
Eating a high-protein breakfast
To manage weight during the holidays, Dr. Lieb recommends sticking to a routine, eating a high-protein breakfast, and getting adequate sleep. She advises limiting alcohol intake, opting for clear liquors, and exercising early in the day to boost metabolism. Additionally, having a protein-rich snack before meals can help with self-control.
The holiday season can be crazy
Sims added, “But I think the holiday season can be crazy. You know, everyone is out, everybody’s drinking, everything’s going. There’s, you know, lots going on in terms of like just normal, you know, what the holidays bring.”
It's not all or nothing
Sims said, “It’s not all or nothing. I think this is where we kind of get that mentality, right?”
One bad night
Sims added that “one bad night, two bad nights is not what packs on the pounds. It’s just a little bit here. A little bit there.”
Do not lead to significant weight gain
Sims noted that snacking on children’s leftovers can lead to unnoticed caloric intake. She stated that indulging in holiday treats like cookies and brownies can also quickly add up. Sims’ approach focuses on moderation, as occasional indulgences do not lead to significant weight gain.
Do not eat their food
Sims stated, “If you have children. Do not eat their food and then eat your food. So, the chicken fingers, the pizza, the pasta, the [expletive] tater tots, the leftover fries. That alone. You don’t even realize a little bit here, a little bit here, a little bit here.”
Helped a lot of people
Sims added, “And then you’re going into holidays. So now you’re like cookies, brownies, Christmas decorated fudge brownie – I don’t even know, like whatever. And then you’re constantly – you don’t even realize it. That’s a big tip that has helped a lot of people.”
Enjoyment of holiday treats
Dr. Lieb suggests filling up on vegetables before indulging in higher-carbohydrate options and enjoying small portions of various foods instead of large servings. This approach allows for enjoyment of holiday treats without excessive calorie intake.
