Boeing is set to lay off nearly 400 employees
Boeing is set to lay off nearly 400 employees in Washington state as part of a worldwide reduction affecting 17,000 jobs. Most job losses will occur in mid-January 2025. The layoffs come after a tumultuous year marked by safety concerns and production issues. On January 5, 2024, a door panel blew out mid-flight on an Alaska Airlines flight, revealing ongoing safety problems. The National Transportation Safety Board found that four bolts securing the door plug were missing.
Faced production challenges
Boeing has also faced production challenges, including stalled output of its 737 MAX jet due to a weeks-long strike on the West Coast. The company is adjusting its workforce to align with financial realities.
Based solely on competency
US District Judge Reed O’Connor stated, “In a case of this magnitude, it is in the utmost interest of justice that the public is confident this monitor selection is done based solely on competency.”
Not in the public interest
O’Connor said, “The agreement was ‘not in the public interest.'”
Families of the crash victims
Families of the crash victims had expressed dissatisfaction with the plea deal, calling it a “sweetheart” agreement that fails to hold Boeing accountable. They demand criminal charges against executives and public trials.
An important victory
Paul Cassell, a lawyer representing the victims’ families, said, “Judge O’Connor’s emphatic rejection of the plea deal is an important victory.”
Nothing like this happens again in the future
Cassell stated, “Judge O’Connor has recognized that this was a cozy deal between the government and Boeing that failed to focus on the overriding concerns: holding Boeing accountable for its deadly crime and ensuring that nothing like this happens again in the future.”
Shielded Boeing from prosecution
Boeing and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) have 30 days to update the court on their next steps. They may appeal the rejection or renegotiate the plea agreement after previous violations of a 2021 agreement that shielded Boeing from prosecution.
