Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem
Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Marshall Mathers aka Eminem, has died at the age of 69. Nelson’s relationship with her son, Marshall, was a recurring theme in his music. Eminem’s half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Mathers, reacted to Nelson’s death online, noting that he was feeling “hatred and mixed emotions.” Eminem’s songs “My Name Is” and “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” accused Nelson of neglect.
Estranged from her for years
Nelson passed away at 69 after battling advanced lung cancer. Nate and Eminem were estranged from her for years, with Nate entering foster care at eight and later adopted by Eminem. Eminem has not publicly commented on his mother’s death.
Not spoken to her in years
In her final months, Nelson reportedly stayed with family or at a cancer center. A source claimed Eminem had provided financial support but had not spoken to her in years.
Defamation lawsuit
In 1999, Nelson filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Eminem, which she won. She later released a song apologizing and asking him to stop his public attacks.
I’m not ever gonna give up on my kids
Nelson previously stated, “I’m not ever gonna give up on my kids. I won’t give up on anybody.”
There’s hope for everybody
Nelson added, “There’s hope for everybody. It’s a matter of just basically swallowing your pride. It’s like a cashed check. It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.”
Launched him into mainstream success
Dropping out of high school at 17, Eminem had honed his lyrical skills by studying dictionaries and writing. His breakthrough came in 1999 with The Slim Shady LP, produced by Dr. Dre, which launched him into mainstream success.
Personal life
Eminem’s follow-up, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling rap album in history. Eminem’s personal life has been tumultuous, including two marriages to Kim Scott and raising three children, two of whom he adopted.
