Identified as Ankylosaur
In 2011, a remarkable dinosaur fossil was found at Millennium Mine near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Miner Shawn Funk discovered the fossil, initially thought to be a marine reptile. It was later identified as an ankylosaur by experts from the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The discovery is one of many archeological treasures that have been revealed in recent years.

Government property
The fossil quickly became government property, and museum staff spent 14 days extracting it. Technician Mark Mitchell spent six years preparing it, leading to its naming in his honor. Unveiled in 2017 at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, Dr. Henderson called it a “one in a billion” find, emphasizing its importance in paleontological research. The dinosaur’s skin was still attached and its last meal still in the stomach, according to scientists.
