While still in high school, she signed a modeling contract with Elite Model Management. She made her film debut at age 21 opposite Jim Carrey in the comedy The Mask (1994).
Launched her career
At age 21, Cameron Diaz auditioned for The Mask, playing the jazz singer Tina Carlyle, which launched her career after it became one of the top ten highest-grossing films of 1994.
Lead roles
Diaz then starred in the independent black comedy The Last Supper (1995) and had lead roles in Feeling Minnesota (1996) and She’s the One (1996).
Breaking her hand
After breaking her hand and withdrawing from Mortal Kombat, she re-entered mainstream cinema with the romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), co-starring Julia Roberts.
Further acclaim
In 1998, she gained further acclaim for her role in There’s Something About Mary, the highest-grossing comedy of that year, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. She also appeared in the poorly received film Very Bad Things (1998).
