Meet The Drama Queens and Kings of the 90s
The 1990s had it all, vibrant trends, in your face marketing, and larger-than-life personalities as celebrity culture took the spotlight. As events like the MTV Music Awards unfolded live and tabloids and celebrity magazines flew off the shelves, the public reveled in the drama. These high-profile feuds weren’t just tabloid fodder; they impacted the careers and relationships of those involved and reshaped the media landscape for better or worse. These iconic clashes between music, television, and fashion titans weren’t just entertaining—they revealed much about the time’s power dynamics and cultural shifts. Let’s dive into some of the most unforgettable celebrity showdowns that defined the 90s.

Britney vs. Christina

Britney vs. Christina
Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were often portrayed as rivals in the late 90s, a narrative fueled by their shared history on “The Mickey Mouse Club” and their simultaneous rise in the pop music industry. The media often contrasted Britney’s “girl next door” image with Christina’s “edgier” persona. Their supposed rivalry was highlighted at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, where they performed with Madonna in a segment that ended with both kissing the pop icon. However, Britney’s kiss captured most of the media attention, further fueling the rivalry narrative and significantly impacting their public images and careers.

Courtney Love vs. Madonna

At the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, Courtney Love famously disrupted Madonna’s interview by throwing her makeup compact towards her from off-camera. When Kurt Loder invited Love to join the interview, Love’s erratic behavior and Madonna’s visibly uncomfortable reactions made for a surprising and memorable live T.V. moment. This singular moment, captured live on MTV, showed audiences exactly what it would be like to be stuck in a conversation with Courtney Love at a party. To quote Mad Men, not great Bob.

Jay Leno vs. David Letterman

Jay Leno vs. David Letterman
Jay Leno and David Letterman’s rivalry began when they were contenders for the coveted host position for “The Tonight Show” following Johnny Carson’s retirement. The decision to go with Leno was controversial, particularly as Letterman had been Carson’s favored successor. This sparked a bitter competition between Leno’s “The Tonight Show” and Letterman’s “The Late Show,” with both shows often making pointed jokes about the other. This feud made audiences realize that there are people behind the personalities of their favorite late-night performers, and that those personalities weren’t always great.

Oasis vs. Blur

Oasis vs. Blur
In what became known as “The Battle of Britpop,” Oasis and Blur symbolized the rivalry between different cultural and musical aesthetics within the U.K. In August 1995, the bands released singles on the same day—Oasis with “Roll With It” and Blur with “Country House.” The media frenzy around which band would chart higher ended with Blur outselling Oasis, though both bands experienced significant publicity boosts. Honestly there were no losers in this face off, unless you count lesser-known Britpop bands like Elastica not catching any of this chart topping heat. Whoever you prefer in the Battle of Britpop, it’s incredible to see both bands still going strong today (as of this writing the Gallagher Brothers are still planning a world tour in 2025, but that could change tomorrow).

Naomi Campbell vs. Tyra Banks

In the fashion world, few feuds were as notable as that between supermodels Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. The rivalry began in earnest in the early 90s. This was the early days of Banks’ career, when she was compared to Campbell on a daily basis. Banks has spoken about how she felt sabotaged by Campbell, which she perceived as an attempt to stifle her rising success.

Anjelica Huston vs. Madonna

Well, well, well, if it isn’t Madonna rearing her head again. The feud between Anjelica Huston and Madonna all started over the role of Morticia Addams in “The Addams Family” of all things. Marked by public and media speculation as to who would play the ghoulish and sexy matriarch of the creepy, kooky, and all together ooky family. Huston, who eventually won the role, tried to keep the feud out of the press. On the other hand, Madonna leaned into the morbid girl look complete with long dark hair and intense lip liner for a while, almost as if she was saying, “See what could have been?”

Sinead O'Connor vs. Frank Sinatra

Sinead O'Connor vs. Frank Sinatra
The feud between Sinead O’Connor and Frank Sinatra began when O’Connor stated she would not perform if “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played before her show at Performing Arts Center in Saratoga, New York, in 1990. For some reason this made it to Sinatra’s radar and it set him off. Not only did Ol’ Blue Eyes threaten to physically assault O’Connor (very cool! definitely the way to handle the situation!), but this didn’t deter the Irish singer. After winning three Moon Men at the MTV Music Video Awards she told reporters, “I didn’t want to go on stage after the national anthem of a country that’s harassing people when they perform at gigs.”

Tupac vs. Biggie

Tupac vs. Biggie
The feud between Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. remains one of the most intense and captivating in music history, symbolic of the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry. The two rappers were friendly, but that all ended after Tupac was shot in the lobby of a New York City recording studio in 1994. Pac blamed Biggie and his associates (namely Puff Daddy) for the assault, and immediately launched the nastiest diss track ever recorded, “Hit ‘Em Up.” On this track Pac claims to have slept with Biggie’s wife, Faith Evans. It’s not great. The two men went back and forth until they were both unceremoniously murdered by unknown assailant. Pac was killed 1996, and Biggie was also shot to death in 1997. Unfortunately we’re still learning facts about this tragic event.

Elton John vs. Madonna

Elton John and Madonna’s feud featured several public spats, with Elton often vocal about his disdain for aspects of Madonna’s music and public persona. His criticism peaked when he publicly described her song for the James Bond movie “Die Another Day” as the worst Bond theme ever. Is he wrong? It’s hard to say, but the comment obviously led to a falling out between the two pop stars. Hopefully they’ve managed to patch things up.

Shannen Doherty vs. Alyssa Milano

Shannen Doherty vs. Alyssa Milano
Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano’s feud had apparently been going on for years, but it became public knowledge during their time together on “Charmed,” the hit CW show about a trio of witchy sisters. The tension between the two reportedly stemmed from personality clashes and differing work styles, eventually leading to Doherty’s departure after the third season. This feud was particularly notable as it was played out in the press, with both actresses commenting on their strained relationship, especially Doherty, who had no problem about lighting people up in the gossip rags. Sadly, the feud continued until 2024, with the two stars giving different versions of events and taking jabs at each other in the press until Doherty’s untimely death from breast cancer.
