Around the world

Around the world
The 90s wasn’t all grunge and renting movies from Blockbuster. This was an era of intense political scandals that disrupted nations and gripped the world. From the White House to Russia, and everywhere in between political figures made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Today we’re looking at the controversies that shocked global audiences and left a lasting impact on people around the world.

Oval office

Oval office
No political scandal rocked the world like the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky affair that occurred in the Oval Office from 1995 to 1997. From the moment the scandal broke the world was gripped by a media frenzy and an ongoing debate about the intertwining of morality and politics. The affair led to Clinton’s impeachment, and Lewinsky unfairly became a laughing stock who’s only recently reclaimed her story. This is a scandal that created a rupture in partisan politics, one from which we’ll never return.

Granted clemency

Granted clemency
Before President Clinton took office in 1992, sitting President George H.W. Bush granted clemency to four government officials convicted of withholding information and perjury – all related to the Iran-Contra affair. On December 24, 1992, Bush essentially stopped further investigation into the scandal when he granted a reprieve to high ranking members of the CIA and members of the Reagan White House who all allegedly had knowledge of the sale of arms to Iran between 1981 and 1986.

Been prevented

Been prevented
When Princess Diana passed away in a tragic car accident on August 31, 1997, it was like a collective punch in the gut to the entire world. Hounded by the press from the moment she married into the Royal Family, Diana spent the last decade of her life under near constant supervision by the paparazzi. Following her divorce from Charles, Diana spent her final years helping people in need which is why her death after a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France, is such a loss to civilization. The fact that Diana’s death could have been prevented if the media had simply given her some space still haunts us.

Massive refugee crisis

Massive refugee crisis
NATO’s intervention in Kosovo remains a defining moment of geopolitics in the 90s. The campaign, which centered on a controversial series of bombings, shows us just how complex humanitarian efforts can be in under-developed countries. The NATO bombing lasted for nearly three moments, killing close to 1,000 members of the Yugoslav security forces and nearly 500 civilians. Aside from the death toll, NATO’s intervention led to a massive refugee crisis in the area.

Criminal case

Criminal case
The O.J. Simpson Trial was technically a criminal case, but it blurred the line between celebrity culture in politics in ways that we’re still dealing with to this day. The televised trial and its racially charged debates sparked a cultural and political flashpoint that continues to stir our conversations about race, the police, and the media’s obligation to tell a straightforward story to this day.

Preventable tragedy

Preventable tragedy
The 51-Day standoff between the Branch Davidians and federal agents in Waco, Texas, known now as the Waco Siege, ended in an all too preventable tragedy when U.S. federal government and Texas state law enforcement officials raided the group’s compound from February 28 to April 19, 1993. The raid resulted in dozens of deaths, including the leader of the Davidans, David Koresh. Finger pointing and a game of he said-she said followed the raid, as well as a groundswell of anti-government sentiment in the United States.

The Gulf War

The Gulf War
The Gulf War in 1991 was the first war that people at home could watch in real time. Spurred on by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, America’s involvement in the war was immediately put under the microscope likely due to the way that the public was able to shape an opinion about the military action simply by turning on the news. Who can forget the cinematic shots of rockets streaking across the sky in the Middle East? No matter your thoughts on U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf, it’s clear that the world was changed forever by our ability to watch the battle unfold in front of our very eyes.

Marred with controversy

Marred with controversy
Much of Bill Clinton’s presidency was marred with controversy from his alleged improprieties. In 1994, the Clintons (Bill and Hillary) were placed under the microscope for their involvement in a series of real estate dealings near Flippin, Arkansas. Basically, the Clinton’s lost money on a plot of land in the early ‘80s, which isn’t a crime, but the Clinton’s partner in the deal, Jim McDougal, later defrauded a small savings and loan corporation as well as the investment firm Capital Management Services to the tune of millions of dollars. David Hale, Capital Management Services’ former president alleged that the Clintons were aware of McDougal’s wrongdoing and that some of the fraudulent cash was used to pay off Whitewater losses as well as any lasting debts from Clinton’s 1980s gubernatorial campaign. No charges were ever brought against the Clinton’s, but this scandal marred their reputation throughout Clinton’s presidency.

Mass violence

Mass violence
Nearly 800,000 members of the Tutsi people were massacred in the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, when Hutu nationalists were empowered by the local government to commit horrific acts of brutality against their fellow man. The mass killings began on April 6, 1994, and spread across the country until early July when the Tutsi-led Rwandese Patriotic Front gained control of the situation. By the time all was said and done, nearly 2 million refugees fled Rwanda creating a national crisis exposing the consequences of political inaction in the face of mass violence.

Russian President

Russian President
Russian President Boris Yetsin’s unexpected resignation brought Russia to a full stop at the end of the 90s. Yeltsin’s tenure was packed with economic turmoil and allegations of corruption, so it’s not a surprise that he vacated the position. However, this created a vacuum which was filled by Vladmir Putin, a decision that completely changed the trajectory of global politics in the 21st century.
